Pigmentation assessment and treatment in Singapore

Understanding the type of pigmentation is the first step. At Belief Medical, Dr Sam Lua assesses your skin and discusses the options appropriate to your concern, with an explanation of the costs and follow-up involved.

What it is

Pigment is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Skin takes its colour from melanin. Pigmentation appears when the cells that make it are prompted to make more in particular places — by ultraviolet light, by hormones, or by inflammation left behind after a spot or an injury. Most faces carry more than one of those drivers at once.

That is why the same brown patch behaves so differently from person to person, and why identifying the driver comes before anything else.

The types

Telling them apart.

Sun-related

Small, sharp-edged spots on the areas that catch the most sun. They build over years of cumulative exposure — common in our climate.

Melasma

Larger, soft-edged and often symmetrical across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. Hormonal as well as sun-driven, and prone to returning.

Post-inflammatory

The darker marks left once a breakout or irritation has settled. They sit exactly where the skin was inflamed and fade on their own timeline.

Deeper pigment

Hori’s naevus and naevus of Ota sit deeper in the skin than surface pigment, which changes what is appropriate to consider.

Mixed pigmentation is common — more than one type at the same time is the rule rather than the exception.

Assessment

How we work it out.

Assessment looks at the pattern, where it sits, how long it has been there and what has happened to it before — sometimes with a specialised lamp to judge how deep the pigment lies. From there the plan follows the diagnosis.

Approaches

What treatment can involve.

The right approach depends entirely on what we find. These are the categories we work with; the specifics, including any prescription treatments, are discussed and decided in person.

Topical prescription treatments

Doctor-prescribed creams aimed at the mechanism behind your type of pigment, reviewed as your skin responds.

Light-based treatments

Targeted, light-based treatment matched to the depth and behaviour of the pigment.

In-clinic procedures

Where appropriate, procedural options discussed alongside their trade-offs and what each asks of you.

Sun protection and maintenance

Unglamorous and the part that decides whether results hold. Every plan includes it.

You are told the consultation fee beforehand. Treatment plans are quoted after your assessment.

Pigmentation is usually managed and kept under control rather than removed once and for all, because the triggers behind it do not disappear.

Common questions

Pigmentation questions, answered plainly.

How do I know what type of pigmentation I have?

The reliable way is a doctor’s assessment. At Belief Medical, Dr Sam Lua examines the pattern, distribution and history of your pigmentation before any treatment is discussed — melasma, sunspots and post-inflammatory marks each behave differently.

How much does pigmentation treatment cost in Singapore?

Consultations at Belief Medical are charged at a fee you are told beforehand. Treatment plans are quoted after your assessment, because what is appropriate depends on the type and depth of the pigment.

Can pigmentation be removed permanently?

Because the triggers persist, pigmentation is usually managed and kept under control rather than removed once and forever. A plan that includes maintenance is what makes the difference.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. Belief Medical is a private clinic at Kitchener Complex, near Lavender MRT — message us on WhatsApp (+65 8770 9188) to book a consultation.
